Clay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,183, making it the fifth-least populous county in Georgia. The county seat is Fort Gaines
As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,183 people residing in the county. 60.4% were Black or African American, 37.6% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% of some other race and 1.2% of two or more races. 0.8% were Hispanic or Latino (of any race)
The town of Fort Gaines was founded in 1816. It was named for Gen. E. P. Gaines. A fort of the same name had been built in 1814 nearby on the Chattachoochee River. In 1854, Fort Gaines was designated seat of the newly formed Clay County
According to the United States Census Bureau, Fort Gaines has a total area of 7.7 square miles (19.9 km2), of which 4.8 square miles (12.4 km2) is land and 2.9 square miles (7.6 km2), or 37.99%, is water.

The Clay County Board of Commissioners is seeking a Public Works Director.
The Public Works Director directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in installation, maintenance, repair, expansion, and relocation of water distribution, road construction and maintenance as well as refuse services and facilities by performing essential duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
Duties of the Public Works Director
Develops plans to meet and serve expanding community need for services offered
Plans methods and sequence of operations to facilitate additions, deletions and modifications to the system
Directs activities of subordinate personnel who oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of Public Works services
Inspects field projects to confirm conformance to specifications
Confers with administrative and technical personnel and personnel of other utilities to coordinate departmental activities.
Evaluates new developments in materials, tools, and equipment to recommend or deny purchase
Prepares budget estimates based on anticipated needs of department
Effectively directs the day to day operations as needed and under the guidance of the Clay County Personnel Policies and Procedures
The selected applicant must have a minimum of five years management experience in public works and/or construction related fields; needs a high level of mathematical skills to compute metric and standard measurements, geometry and trigonometry; appropriate safety classes as required by GDOT and a valid driver’s license.
Clay County is located approximately 60 miles west of Albany, GA and approximately 70 miles south of Columbus at the state line. The county budget is approximately $5.0 million and employs approximately 60 employees.
